In recent years, the Chinese city of Guangzhou has come into its own as a preferred travel destination. China’s third largest city is a true gem. Situated in the Pearl River delta, Guangzhou offers unmatched natural beauty and centuries of history. At the same time, she remains a cutting-edge modern city. Guangzhou offers visitors numerous attractions not to be missed.
See the Five Rams at Yuexiu Park
Known as one of the “Eight Attractions of Guangzhou,” Yuexiu Park features lush and verdant grounds built around its namesake hill. Situated across a staggering 247 acres right in the city limits, travelers encounter here a world within a world with artificial lakes and historic statues dotting the landscape. One of its most famous landmarks is the statue of the Five Rams. This symbolizes the founding of Guangzhou as the five rams were the means by which the immortals of old entered the region to bring its inhabitants rice and prosperity.
A Taste of the Modern
Guangzhou also boasts a new and ultra-modern area in the Zhujiang New Town district. Built in 2010 in part for the 2010 Asian Games, this area has become the financial epicenter of the city. As such, it offers a host of attractions, ranging from gourmet restaurants to five-star hotels to several malls. Much of the architecture in this district is brand-new. Locals and visitors alike flock to the area after dark to admire the neon-lit skyscrapers. Zhujiang New Town provides a great spot for photos and people-watching.
