Historical background of nursing education can be traced back to the year 1860 when Nightingale established the first nursing school. This nursing training school was established at St Thomas’ Hospital, London and curriculum of the course mainly focused on the nursing practices. Earlier courses on nursing were focused on patient hygiene and task competence. Over the decades, nursing education has evolved to a great degree and now have specialized nurses who are skilled in a particular task. Some of the nurses are completely trained for operating rooms while few others are known to hold administrative tasks. Nursing education is a mix of medical field, personality development in general and specific health issues.

This type of education integrates several allied fields of medicine and general health sciences today. Nursing education can be truly termed as inter-professional education and nursing professionals are well known to take up random duties in addition to their regular nursing duties. However, this profession has now evolved to a great degree and nursing professionals are now making contributions equivalent to medical practitioners and other hospital staff.

In some countries, nursing education is not completed through graduate level programs while few others make it necessary for the aspirants to qualify a state level licensing exam.
